Executive Summary

This research report reviews the current status of the worldwide solar cell industry, market size, market share, and forecast for the next ten years. It also includes in-depth research on new emerging technologies, major players and future roadmap (beyond 2015). This study includes profiles of 15 major companies, 4 research ventures, and 4 research institutes & universities from major geographical locations. A section is dedicated to emerging solar cell materials.

In 2006, the worldwide solar photovoltaic industry reached a consolidated figure of 2.1GW*, representing an annual growth of 30 percent. Emerging technologies represented about 0.22GW worldwide. The solar cell market based on new emerging technologies is estimated to increase tremendously over the next 10 years at an AAGR of 43.1 percent capturing more than 13 percent of the total market share (in MW capacity). The enormous growth rate of emerging technologies is attributed to the demand for non-silicon based solar cells, higher efficiency, cost reduction, and overall awareness of extracting energy from alternative sources such as wind, solar, biomass and other natural sources.

At present, the photovoltaic industry is in the process of leaving its infancy and becoming a fully-fledged mass-producing industry. Currently, the market is dominated by solar cells based on mono and multi-crystalline silicon technologies.

The new emerging solar cell technologies discussed in this report are Thin-film Amorphous, Dye-sensitized cells, Organic & Polymer, Nano-crystalline, and other Thin-film technologies such as Cadmium Telluride, Copper Indium Gallium Diselenide (CIGS), Copper Indium Diselenide (CIS), and Gallium Arsnide (GaAs).

In this report, while we are covering the solar cell market based on the current technologies, we particularly focus on the new emerging technologies and related materials, and pursuing the market trends from a global perspective. To be more precise:
