Executive Summary

This latest forecast is an update to the IPTV Global Forecast – 2006 to 2010 published October 2006. It incorporates the most recent information on IPTV deployments, including:

  • The current and planned deployments of IPTV services by large carriers in Europe.
  • The current and planned IPTV deployments by competitive and smaller carriers in Europe.
  • The current state of IPTV deployments at AT&T, and Verizon in the U.S.
  • The initiation of IPTV trials in China and India.
  • The success of a number of early IPTV deployments in Canada, Europe, and Asia.

We are forecasting that the number of DSL subscribers will grow from 218 million in 2007 to 353 million in 2011, a compounded annual growth rate of 13 percent. These DSL subscribers are the base for the IPTV subscribers shown in Figure 1-1.

Figure 1-1 shows that the number of global IPTV subscribers will grow from 14.3 million in 2007 to 63.6 million in 2011, a compound annual growth rate of 45 percent.

Europe remains the leading region, and its subscriber numbers have increased versus the October 2006 forecast. Asia's prospects have continuted to improve, as tests in China and India have blossomed into successful deployments. We believe that Asian and European subscriber numbers will steadily grow closer over the period of this forecast.

Figure 1-2 shows that the global IPTV service revenue forecast is $3.6 billion in 2007 growing to $20.3 billion in 2011, a compound annual growth rate of 71 percent. Although Asia and Europe are increasingly close in the number of subscribers, Europe and North America are generating a disproportionate amount of revenue, due to lower average prices in Asia.
