Introduction Market Leaders

This Market Leaders segment identifies which IPTV Set-top Box (STB) companies are leading each of the IPTV markets globally and within the four regional markets that we track. We have measured market position using estimates of the actual number of active IPTV subscribers that are using or being supported each STB company’s products based on information from over 350 service providers worldwide. The number of subscribers supported is a direct measure of position of each STB company. This methodology gives a good measure of the relative position of each company as well as the prospects for future growth.

This report includes a ranking of the leading STB companies along with the number of subscribers or channels that each company’s products support today. The totals include subscribers served by systems developed by the service provider and deployments where the suppliers have not been identified. This is a significant upgrade over our past Market Leader reports.

We also rate each of these companies based on their market position using the following scale:

• Dominant: The company supports a large portion of the applicable subscriber base with no other competitor supporting a similar number of subscribers.
• Leader: The company is one of a small number of companies that support a large number of subscribers with the other competitors supporting significantly fewer.
• Participant: The company supports a significant number of subscribers but does not qualify as dominant or as a leader.
• Emerging: The company has recently entered the market and is not yet supporting a large number of subscribers.

In addition, we rate the growth prospects for each company based on the number of large IPTV service deployments the company is participating in:

• Regional Market Leader rankings:

  • Strong growth prospects “*” in the Regional Market Leaders section means that the company is participating in one significant IPTV deployments.
  • Very strong growth prospects “**” in the Regional Market Leaders section means that the company is participating in at least two significant IPTV deployments.
• Global Market Leader rankings:
  • Strong growth prospects “*” in the Global Market Leaders section means that the company is participating in two significant IPTV deployments.
  • Very strong growth prospects “**” in the Global Market Leaders section means that the company is participating in at least three significant IPTV deployments.

A significant deployment is one that has been announced and is expected to grow by at least 100,000 subscribers in 2006 or 2007.

This report includes the Asian, European, North American, and Rest of the World (ROW) regions.

Introduction Market Leaders

This report analyzes which companies have taken leadership positions in each regional market for the STB segment.

The market leaders for each of these geographically-based markets are defined for each of the following regions:

• Global
• Asia
• Europe
• North America
• Rest of the World (ROW)

The ratings in this Market Leader report is based on a database of IPTV service providers that we have gathered. There are 370 IPTV service providers in this database with 213 of them in North America. This is up from 287 service providers since our September 2005 IPTV Market Leader report.

There are sixteen IPTV deployments that we expect will increase by 100 thousand IPTV subscribers in 2008 and 2007 based on our March 2006 IPTV Global Forecast. We have used deployment in these networks as a strong indication of future growth.

We have included a table for each of the four regions that includes the total trackable subscribers for that product sector. We have also included tables in this report for each category that evaluate the position of each company in the STB market. The tables also list which companies in each category are deployed in the IPTV networks of these sixteen service providers listed above. The information in these tables is used to determine which companies have Strong Growth Prospects or Very Strong Growth Prospects in each region.
