There are nine IP TV deployments that we expect will
have a large number (hundreds of thousands) of IP TV
subscribers in 2004 and 2005. We have used deployment
in these networks as a strong indication of future growth.
These companies include:
| Belgacom - Belgium |
KDDI Japan |
| Chunghwa Telecom Taiwan |
PCCW Hong Kong |
| FastWeb Italy |
Softbank - Japan |
| France Telecom - France |
Swisscom - Switzerland |
| Free - France |

This report found that Motorola Telecom Access Solutions
continues to be a strongly positioned company because
if offers access, set-top box, and middleware products
and because it strongly dominates the U.S. market. Its
primary risk is that the move toward ADSL and especially
ADSL2+ will obviate the need for the VDSL technology
that is Next Levels forte. While Motorola is not
included in any of these major deployments, its broad
acceptance by the small independent U.S. Telcos has
generated major growth.
This report also found that Alcatel to be in a strong
position to take advantage of the growth of the IP TV
market. It is the leading DSL systems vendor worldwide
and has an aggressive IP TV program. It also involved
in four major IP TV deployments. This should help Alcatel
develop a strong base of IP TV business. With the entrance
of Siemens and Thales into the IP TV integration business,
the industry is showing signs of a new development cycle.
Video headend systems are lead by Tut Systems in North
America and by Optibase and Tandberg in Europe and Asia.
It appears that Optibase is putting more focus on Asia
and Tandberg on Europe.
Bitband and Kasenna have emerged as the strongest Video
On Demand server companies. Both companies use modular
architectures that support small deployments and can
scale to support a large number of subscribers.
IP TV set top box deployments have been spread across
a number of companies. The European companies such as
Telsey, Kreatel, and Pace, have the biggest part of
the market today. The emergence of Yuxing, a Chinese
set-top box manufacturer, as the set-top box supplier
to PCCW in Hong Kong may indicate that a shift to low
cost manufacturers in China may be starting.
The major Middleware trend is that many of the large
IP TV service providers have developed their own Middleware
software. PCCW in Hong Kong, FastWeb in Italy, and Free
in France have all developed their own Middleware and
account for more than 80 percent of the Asian and European
markets, respectively. Motorola dominates the Middleware
market in North America. Myrio is doing well in this
market in North America and Orca is doing well in Asia.
Both companies have entered the European market.
Content Protection and Digital Rights Management are
used to support Video On Demand today. Its use will
increase as more service providers offer Video On Demand
and as it is required for multichannel broadcast content.
Widevine is an early leader with deployments at Sasktel
in Canada and Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan. There are
a number of other companies that have entered this market
including NDS and Irdeto Access that have significant
experience with cable and satellite TV systems. Kasennas
integrated content offering is likely to have an interesting
effect on this market. This offering includes Video
On Demand servers, Video On Demand content, and Securemedias
Content Protection/Digital Rights Management system
as an integrated package
The information in this report is as accurate as we
can make it. It is important, however, to realize that
the IP TV market is at a very early stage of development.
It is likely that there will be significant shifts in
the market leadership positions of relatively short
periods of time. It is likely that a number of unanticipated
events will occur that may change this evaluation. We
plan to produce Market Leader reports every six months
to track these changes closely.
