Las Vegas, NV, USA
Session 1: Will Broadband Be the Delivery Mechanism of Future Television
For the first time we have seen a decline in the number of people paying for TV. While most operators around the world have seen steady ARPU growth, there is great concern that perhaps the threat of “Over the Top” Television, enabled by ever increasing bandwidth availability and more efficient encoding, is a real and present danger to the industry as we know it. We will examine options that are open to the broadcasters and operators and explore the technical and operational constraints that face different markets and present real life experiences from operators where multi-screen broadband delivered services have been deployed.
Session 2: Show Me the Money: What Makes Commerical Sense in the Future
Even though some investment analysts have shown the dumb pipe business model to return more on investment than the current model, there is a lot to be lost if operators lose that connection with the subscriber. “Cutting the cord”, as it has become known, represents a threat to broadcasters and pay TV operators alike as it erodes both advertising and subscription models equally. In the spirit of “If You Can’t Beat Them then Join Them”, this session will examine the business detail and the nuances in bringing an “Over The Top” experience inside “the wall” to retain that customer connection and even gain additional ARPU growth.

MPEGIF Master Class at NAB 2010
April 14, 2010 | 9am-12:00pm | Room N234/236
Las Vegas Convention Center
Las Vegas, NV, USA
The level of change facing the television/video industry today can be daunting. For many years, competition for subscribers revolved around content, while the network architecture remained relatively stable. More recently, Video on Demand, High Definition, Start Over and other time shifted applications have been widely deployed. This has now been joined by the “TV Everywhere” concept, and 3D is today trying to leap from the theatre into the living room. Every year there is something new to contemplate and for which to potentially plan. Over the years, the MPEG Industry Forum has worked aggressively to bring clarity to the industry’s vision of the future and to advocate for the adoption of standards that accelerate that clarity. This year at NAB this task has become more important than ever as new technologies create new opportunities to make (or lose) money. The 2010 MasterClass at NAB is focused around two areas that will bring technologists and leading executives from operators and content owners around the world to discuss these new opportunities and to share their experience and perspectives.
