Panelists, Operators and participants all seem to agree that if IPTV Operators do nothing, consumers will buy OTT services elsewhere. One panelist, from Skitter, offers a standalone hybrid OTT/DTH solution that offers DTH (Satellite) for live programming and OTT for on-demand content through its partnerships. Sezmi also recommended a hybrid OTT/DTT solution using free DTT (Digital Terrestrial) for live content and OTT for on-demand. Another similar DTH/OTT solution comes from Paris-based Netgem based on its experience in Australia and Moroco. Also represented on the MRG panel was Entone, which is now offering its new “Fusion TV,” a hybrid OTT/DTH system that offers VUDU for online services and EchoStar for linear (including HD), as well as a whole-home DVR feature.

Motorola Survey Finds Social TV Usage Increasing
November 2010
According to research from Motorola Mobility, 42% of consumers have engaged in social media while watching a TV show or video. Of this group, 22% said that social media multitasking is a regular part of their viewing experience and 61% would be prepared to pay more for a service that offered these capabilities.
About two-thirds said it was either “quite” or “very important” to be able to access free content on devices other than the main television set in the home. That compares to 39% when asked a similar question for subscription content. A quarter of respondents said it is important to be able to access free content when mobile.
On a country basis, China, the United Arab Emirates and Russia are the most enthusiastic when it comes to integrating social media into their viewing habits. The Japanese, Germans and viewers in the Nordics are the least likely to chat, use instant messaging or a platform like Facebook or Twitter. According to the study, 84% of Japanese viewers have not used Social TV as well. Globally, however, 58% of people who have used social media during a TV program would change their Service Provider if this was offered as an integrated service.
Shopping via television is of interest to 42% of viewers globally, followed by chat (30%) and updating a social media site (27%). Being able to use Twitter came in lowest with only 17%.
