Executive Summary

This latest forecast is an update to the IPTV Global Forecast – 2007 to 2011 published October 2007. It incorporates the most recent information on IPTV deployments, including:

  • The current and planned deployments of IPTV services by carriers in Europe.
  • The current and planned IPTV deployments by carriers in Asia.
  • The current state of IPTV deployments at AT&T and Verizon in the U.S., as well as smaller Operators in the U.S. and Canada.
  • The initiation of IPTV trials in China and India.
  • The success of a number of early IPTV deployments in Canada, Europe, and Asia.

We are forecasting that the number of DSL subscribers will grow from 263 million in 2008 to 404 million in 2012, a compounded annual growth rate of 9 percent. These DSL subscribers are the base for the IPTV subscribers shown in Figure 1-1.

Figure 1-1 shows that the number of global IPTV Subscribers will grow from 24 million in 2008 to 92.8 million in 2012, a compound annual growth rate of 31 percent.

Figure 1-2 shows that the global IPTV Service Revenue Forecast is $7.2 billion in 2008 growing to $31.6 billion in 2012, a compound annual growth rate of 34.5 percent. Although Asia and Europe are almost equal in the number of subscribers in 2012, Europe and North America will generate a disproportionate share of global revenue, due to very low ARPUs in China and India, the fastest growing (and ultimately, the biggest markets) in Asia.
