Executive Summary
The goal of this report is to better articulate the video monitoring and analyzer market, as it relates to real-time video monitoring in IPTV, Cable, Satellite and Terrestrial Broadcasting systems. In order to accomplish this, MRG surveyed video monitoring and analyzer Vendors to learn about the video monitoring and analyzer market size, the market drivers, and relative market share rankings of the main Vendors. MRG also surveyed of Service Providers to better understand the video monitoring and analyzing market from their point of view. Because Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and Deep Content Inspection (DCI) [1] are part of the technology used by probes and analyzers covered here, this report reflects the high-growth potential that probes and monitors will play in delivering QoS and QoE (Quality of Service and Quality of Experience) to consumers and in helping Operators effectively manage their IPTV networks.
[1] “DPI” refers to packet inspection at OSI layers that reveal information about the types of data being transported. “DCI” refers to the use of MPEG monitoring of specific key frames within the MPEG packets to monitor video quality. See Addendum 1 for details.
This report breaks down the market between video monitoring probes and analyzers, then presents a total market size for both categories.
In this research, it was learned that many Vendors serve a variety of markets, not just video monitoring and analysis. As a result, Vendors were only asked for revenues for the video monitors and analyzers that serve the IPTV, Cable, Satellite and Terrestrial markets. A company’s total revenues or earnings from other markets are not counted.
This report breaks down the market between video monitoring probes and analyzers, then presents a total market size for both categories. In the qualitative portion of this study, both Vendors and Service Providers were asked questions about market drivers for video monitoring. Some of the key questions of this report include:
- What is the size of the video monitor and analyzer market?
- What is the breakdown of the video monitoring market by geography and by industry?
- What are the market drivers for Service Providers and Vendors? Is it customer complaints about video quality, reaching a certain number of subscribers, or something else entirely?

Overall, the total revenues for video monitoring and analyzers was US$166 million in 2009 as shown in Figure 1-1 below. Although the market may seem small, there is rapid growth. From 2007, the market has grown about 130% (CAGR 51.9%) in just three years. Keep in mind that the actual market size may be larger, since some Vendor companies did not report exact revenue numbers.
