MRG’s Spring 2010 IPTV Market Leaders Report (MLR) Reveals New Vendor Priorities and Operator Business Models
Over 6 Million IPTV Subscribers Added Globally in the Last 6 Months
San Jose, CA: May 11, 2010—MRG Inc. announces new leaders in the global IPTV Market Leaders Report — APRIL 2010 (MLR), a semi-annual report ranking IPTV Vendors and Operators worldwide. Over 100 Vendors are ranked in 24 regional sectors including Access, Content Protection/DRM (CP/DRM), Set-top Boxes (STB), Middleware, Video Headend (VHE), and Video-on-Demand (VOD). The report includes 6 million new subscribers and 50 new IPTV Operators added since the last MLR in October 2009.
“Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola and Microsoft lead the global Market Leader Rankings in five of the six IPTV product segments that we track,” said Jose Alvear, IPTV Senior Analyst with MRG. “What this means is that Vendors with a more complete IPTV ecosystem tend to be more successful than Vendors with just one IPTV product.” Larger Vendors are clearly looking to build a full IPTV ecosystem so they can continue to work with large Telcos around the world. For example, Motorola recently acquired a CP/DRM Vendor (SecureMedia) and a VOD Vendor (BitBand), and it now appears in all six IPTV product segments.
Yet, as this trend continues for larger Vendors, many smaller Vendors continue to serve small IPTV Operators, often in their own region of the world. In the Middleware and Set-top Box segments, for example, many Vendors serve just a few regions, and sometimes just a specific country. However, Verimatrix, a small CP/DRM company, has maintained its global leadership in CP/DRM through strong partnerships in all four market regions.
Even though IPTV is a worldwide trend, many Vendors have created regionalized market models that allow smaller Operators to develop their own regional look and feel which is very appealing to them. Likewise, large Tier-1’s have in-house tools to do the same in their markets. Ultimately, it may be these highly flexible applications and market models that allow IPTV Operators to grow in today’s challenging regional markets.
“Overall, there are still ample opportunities for key M&As in the next year or so, as Vendors look to create end-to-end IPTV ecosystems in order to remain competitive,” said Alvear. “In addition, some Cable Providers around the world have announced that they are planning to migrate to an IP delivery infrastructure, which would be another great market opportunity for IPTV Vendors, and may cause further Vendor consolidation.”
New features in this report include extended Vendor-ranking profiles for any company ranked within the top 10 in any regional sector, compared to the top 5 only as in the past. Also, there is the addition of up/down arrows alongside the Vendor rankings, which makes it easier to understand how each Vendor is faring compared with past rankings. “We strive to listen to the industry and make improvements to the rankings and our methodology as needed to better serve our customers,” said Alvear.
